What is this? Five pounds of black garden gold, the compost from my worm condo.

I’ve finally harvested it and if you remember, in this video, I took you on a tour of my compost bins and the worm condo that I have in my laundry room.

Harvest Time

Well ,I finally got around to harvesting it and as promised, I am making a video on it. I got almost five pounds. One would think that five pounds of worm droppings, worm poopoo, would stink, but it doesn’t.

It has absolutely no stinky aroma, in fact, it’s neutral. When the worms are actually making the compost in their condo, which you’ll see in the other video, it smells like a rain forest. As long as you don’t overfeed them. And that’s what I’ve found is the key to doing the vermi-culture, the vermicompsoting with the worms. Don’t overfeed the little suckers, because that’s when you’re going to get your fruit flies and all the stinky mess.

You Can Do It

You too can have worms in your home, no stink, no fuss, no muss, eating your vegery leftovers. Look, when we buy a whole watermelon we pay for the whole thing, right?

If you’ve been watching my recipe and green smoothie videos, you know that if I have an organic watermelon, I blend the rind right up.

But if I don’t, I compost the rind and I make new soil out of it. It’s very rewarding that you don’t have to throw out the good food that you paid for; that you can make this black gold compost with it. This is great for your houseplants, it’s great for outside.

It’s very special stuff.

    Jane,
Thanks for the tour of your compost bins.
I just bought an Earth Machine for outside. Where did you buy the stick to aerate the compost?

I haven’t ventured into the worm bins, but it looked like the worms were still in your harvested soil. Do you use this soil indoors with the worms?

      Hi Judy,
You can get the aerating stick right here on my website, just click on SHOP BIMI in the menu bar above and it’s in the Jane’s Composting>Outdoor Composters section.

I remove all the worms when I use the compost on inside plants. For the video I made, I missed a few :)

I’m glad you enjoyed the video and appreciate your kind words and support. Happy composting, it’s fun!
