Today is Day 5 of the 21 Day Avocado Smoothie Plan that I am doing. It’s a book by Dr. Ariel Policano and Lori Clayton, a raw food chef. And today I have chosen, from page 22, Viva Cilantro! I love cilantro, it’s known as the happy herb and it’s also a cleansing agent.

The ingredients are 2 cups of water, 1/2 of a cucumber – I just cut it into 3 pieces. I’m leaving the peel on this cucumber because it’s an organic cucumber, but of course I still washed it. Just because something’s organic doesn’t mean you don’t have to wash it. One stalk of celery, you can just break it into a couple of pieces and add it right in there. 1/2 cup of cilantro. I left the stems on because cilantro stems are tender, so I don’t see any reason to take them off. If your blender can’t handle them, just snip them off and you can do a half a cup of the cilantrio leaves.

1/2 of a lime, peeled. Now we’re talking aroma – cilantro, lime… 1/4 of an avocado. That’s about the amount each of the smoothie’s calls for. And a half of a banana. Make sure the banana’s ripe. You don’t want to put an unripe banana in because it’ll be starchy instead of sweet. And we’re ready to blend. The addition of the avocado, and I learned this from Ariel’s book, is because some of us get hungry soon after we have a green smoothie, and some of us might get cold. So, the avocado is to counteract those two things, so I’d love it if you would try these recipes and let me know if that’s what happens.

Doctor the Doc

Looks like this made about 5 cups. I’m going to pour it into my big mug and that way I can sip from it throughout the morning. Lok at that color. I’m always captivated by the color of the green smoothies. So many different shades, so many different nutrients. Mmmm… I taste the lime, taste the avocado. I actually didn’t taste avocado in the other recipes so far, but I can taste it in this one. Here’s my inital reaction. It’s not sweet. The lime is the overwhelming flavor and I think I would add the full banana to this or the half of banana and a date to it. It could use a little bit more sweetening to it.

The alternative is, if you don’t want to add any more fruit, add a pinch of sea salt and I think it would be perfect. In fact I’m going to do that. I’m just gonna doctor up the doc’s green smoothie a lttle bit with a pinch of sea salt and stir it up. I want something to bring out those flavors. Either go a litttle sweeter and add the entire banana or go savory and add a pinch of sea salt to it. Now let’s try it and see… Yep, that did it for me. Just perked that flavor up.

This is what Ariel and Lori have to say about their Viva Cilantro! green smoothie: Wonderfully refreshing and savory. This smoothie celebrates cilantro. Cilantro is excellent for cleansing heavy metals from the body. However, no one needs to have such high cleansing aspirations in order to enjoy this deliciousness.

[..YouTube..] Yes, I was wondering where the “sweet” was in this recipe. I’ll prob add some dates.

  2. [..YouTube..] Do you have any idea how much calories for this recipe

  3. [..YouTube..] @Sosesm It’s technically a savory smoothie, so I should have mentioned that, but I still thought it needed a boost.I drank it all up, though, as I felt so GOOD on it.

  4. [..YouTube..] @mcthomas30060 It can’t be much because celery, cilantro and cucumber are hardly anything and half a banana is about 50. The avocado may be 75-100. You can go to a nutrition website and easily figure it out. If you do, would you come back and share and then we’ll all know. Thanks!Jane

  5. [..YouTube..] My fitnesspal is telling me about 143 calories….. If so that’s amazing

  6. [..YouTube..] @mcthomas30060 Low cal, high payoff – many thanks to Ariel and Lori!

    Thanks for sharing this Jane!
This is going to be my lunch today.
I am having a green smoothie for breakfast and another for lunch over the next several days. We all are trying to get over a wicked cold(we traveled to the Midwest in Nov and caught it) and I have been pumping the children full of green smoothies.
    Peace and Raw Health,
    Elizabeth

  16. Rebecca says:

This was my 1st avocado smoothie to try – yummy! My baby girl (3 yrs) watched the video with me & then she watched me make the smoothie. She turned up her nose when she smelled the cilantro so I didn’t think she would like the smoothie. I was wrong! She kept sipping from my cup & when I was almost done I asked if she wanted another sip. She she turned it up, & guzzled the last of it! So, I would say this was a success! :)

    • Jane says:

      Hi Rebecca,

Yes, total success – when the kids love it you know it’s good. What a great example you are setting for your child.

And kudos to you for trying new blends!
