What, no kiwi?

I finally found some ripe kiwi fruit. Hi Jessica and hi Apples121000, I don’t know your name, but you’ve both written in and said we don’t see you use much kiwi fruit in your smoothies. Do you have any green smoothie recipes with kiwi?

Well, you know how I am with recipes, I don’t really go by them, I kind of create as I’m going and make my green smoothies on the fly, so I do have ripe kiwi today. I have some kale, some parsley and some cucumber. I’m gonna whip all that up together and come up with this.

You can tell if a kiwi fruit is ripe by pressing on it and making sure it’s soft, but not too soft. I don’t really smell much when I smell kiwi and that’s usually how I tell if fruit is ripe, so I go by the feel of the kiwi fruit. If it’s a little soft at the edges, not too mushy, I think you’re good to go.

If you have organic kiwi, you don’t have to peel it, you can just throw it in to the blender whole with the peel on. These are not organic, so I’ve washed them well, added a little vinegar to the wash water to make sure I can rinse those pesticides down the sink and then I peeled it.

Mellow Out The Kale?

I’m putting 4 ripe kiwi fruit into the VitaMix. I’m adding one half of a long, English cucumber. These I get from Costco, if you look rght on there, it’s certified pesticide free, so I’m not going to peel it. I am going to wash it. Wash all your produce all the time, whether it’s conventional or organic. So add a handful, a large handful of parsley. Not only does it go well with the kiwi fruit, but, since we’re adding a gigantic leaf of dinosaur kale, the parsely helps to mellow out the kale, and that’s why I like to use it.

If you ever think that your greens are too bitter for you or too deep green, add some parsley. It tends to complement the flavor, mask it a little bit and really is a wonderful combination. It’s a great solution to learning how to get your green smoothies greener. And finally, one cup of water. If you do not add water to this, you would have a kiwi pudding, which is terrific, but today I’m making a smoothie.

Jessica wrote, “Hi Jane, I love kiwi fruits and they have twice the Vitamin C of an orange, they’re an excellent source of Vitamins K and E, Folate, Potassium, fiber, Vitamin B6, calcium and a whole lot more.” Look at the color. I love that color of green. Let’s see what it tastes like. All kiwi all the time. I hardly taste that big, beautiful leaf of kale, but I know it’s in there, helping me out.

Kiwi Tang

I know that the parsley, see the parsley and the kale work together and they disappeared. The kiwi is a very strong tasting fruit, that’s why I didn’t need to add any other fruit to this. The kiwis I used are ripe and that’s why this smoothie works. (We know that kiwi is high in Vitamin C, which is an anti-oxidant that…) but it’s not overly sweet. It’s got that kiwi tang to it. That’s what it is, it’s a kiwi tang green smoothie. (…protect your arteries from the damaging effects of free radicals.)

I have both of these to sip on throughout the day. You can put them in your refrigerator as-is, I don’t even cover mine. And then I take them out and sip on them as I want. So Jessica and Apples121000, thanks for writing in with your suggestions and asking for a kiwi green smoothie. It keeps variety in my life, too, since I consume everything you see me make on camera. And I have a new blend. Thank you.

  5. [..YouTube..] I live in London and find it difficult to find good organic kale. Your greens and fruit look great and tasty. Maria

  6. [..YouTube..] @DesertRose121 Hi Maria,I do feel blessed to have such abundance available to me – but then you probably have items that we don’t.:)Jane

[..YouTube..] Nice recipe! My kiwi and Kale weren’t quite as good as yours so I added a lemon and a few dried figs for extra sweet and sour tang.

  8. [..YouTube..] @MARPSTE Dried figs – I have never added those to a green smoothie – new idea, love it. Thanks for commenting and sharing, that’s how we all learn new stuff. Why not soak them like I do with the dates?:)Jane

  9. [..YouTube..] I always find that parsley is one of the most strong and bitter greens, so I don’t understand how it can tone down the bitterness of other greens???

  10. [..YouTube..] @NicoletteLynnMusic It just does :) Taste buds tend to change once a person begins drinking their greens, so don’t be surprised if you come to enjoy parsley. That’s what happened to me and cilantro. And talk about bitter, now I crave dandelion greens.

  11. [..YouTube..] @blenditandMendit That’s awesome. I understand, sometimes the way flavors mix can’t really be explained!! I think I am what they call a “supertaster” because I am extremely sensitive to bitter tastes. I even find most tomatoes and celery and bell peppers bitter (which most people I know say are not at all bitter). But I am finding ways to add small amounts of these ingredients into smoothies or soups etc.
