Today I am making my Salsa Green Smoothie. It’s another savory smoothie with a kick. I know you’re gonna love it. Look at the tomatoes we’re going to put in there. It’s a wonderful cluster of ripe, red tomatoes. So go ahead and add 2 ripe tomatoes to your VitaMix. Then, you know the long, English cucumbers? I cut one in half, peeled it and I’m adding that to the Vitamix. I always love to add cucumber to any savory smoothie that I’m making, because you’ve heard me say it over and over, it has such high water content, it has silica for our skin, it has so many wonderful qualities and I feel so good when I’m drinking it. And for all you women out there who may be in the menopause stage of your life, all that water helps to cool you off. That’s what I experienced, anyway.
This is what makes it arriba, salsa, fun and gives it the kick. This is a jalapeno pepper, you can put in just the tip of it and leave the seeds in, it’s hotter with the seeds. Or you can slice it open, drag the seeds out if you don’t want it too hot. I’m just gonna cut off, maybe, I don’t know what that is, maybe 1/2 inch or 3/4 of an inch, left the seeds in there, and I’m popping that into the blender, because I love that pop from the jalapeno, woohoo baby. And of course, some lemon. The color, the flavor, and the soothing effects that the lemon has on the jalapeno. You’ve heard me sing the praises of lemon before and the way it counteracts the bitterness of some of the darker greens. Well, when I add it to my salsa smoothie, it does the same thing. It kind of settles down the jalapeno. And if this isn’t hot enough for you, you can add more jalapeno pepper, use this as a guideline.
Okay, we have the juice from 1/2 lemon in there. You see the color scheme we have going? The yellow, the green, the red, antioxidants, phyto-nutrients, cannot go wrong here. And of course, now I’m going to add what used to be a green I couldn’t tolerate and then after I began drinking my greens, cilantro became so wonderful to me. Look at that, look at that, I love it. Just the aroma now, I used to think it smelled and tasted like soap. Not anymore. Now I love it, take a big handful of cilantro and put it in there. Look at that, it’s almost like we’re making salsa.
And, this is optional, you can add some parsley. Whenever I have an excuse to add parsley to one of my smoothies, I do it. Or you can just make it all cilantro, but I have the parsley so I’m gonna add it. In fact, I’m gonna throw in a little more cilantro. It’s so lacy, see that, it’s just like lace, this cilantro, that’s what I love about it. I used to be so unknowledgable about my greens that I couldn’t tell parsley and cilantro apart. But there are distinct differences and now I can. You’ll be able to, also.
This is perfect, just the way I like it. The jalapeno just says, “Hi there,” just slightly. Of course, since it’s practically a salsa smoothie, I’m gonna put it in a margarita glass. Look at that. Such green goodness. I’m in such a great mood today. Look at this.
Now, here’s an option. First we’re going to taste it unadorned. Mmm, perfect. It is a low glycemic smoothie because there’s not a lot of fruit in here. Yes, technically the tomato and cucumber are fruit, but they’re very low on the glycemic index scale, not very much sugar in them. Mmm, so refreshing. So, you can drink it just like this or if you’re still getting used to your greens and you still need a little help, you can take… here, let me show you… you can take a little of this black lava sea salt… it’s good… and sprinkle a little bit on top, just like that. Now, you kind of have a green smoothie margarita in a way with the little bit of salt there… it’s fantastic, look at this, I don’t know if you can see the black rivulets from the way the salt just dissolves in the green…

[..YouTube..] Jane, I think we are going to transform ourselves into green smoothies!
Looks really good!
[..YouTube..] @theknuts6 We could do worse
[..YouTube..] That is one crazy ass smoothie, I need to try it out on my Vita-mix.
Hi Jane,
I love your site. Thank you for your time and enthusiasm. My frustration in blending is trying to get a green drink blended with all the prep work needed while trying to get breakfast, lunches, snacks, kids, myself and hubby out the door by 7:20 am. Any help would be appreciated.
Hi Deion,
I appreciate all that it takes to run a family AND get something done for yourself. My best advice? Keep it simple. The entire blending and mending process can take 5, maybe 10 minutes. Peel the fruit, wash the greens, put them in the blender, blend smooth, and drink. Sometimes I drink straight from the blender if that’s all I can do and I’m on my way. Even a handful of fresh greens (remember to rotate them) is better than nothing. Prep the greens and fruit the night before, put them in the blender, put the blender tank in the fridge and pull it out in the morning and blend. Keep it simple, start small, begin imperfectly. You’ll be glad you did.
