Kris writes, “Do you have anything in your recipe bag of tricks for chocolate lovers?” You bet. Enter my luscious Chocotini Shake.

Transcript of this video:

What’s with the balloons? Well, today is my 50th video and I’m celebrating with, what else, chocolate.

I am also making a viewer requested recipe. Kris writes in and asks, “Do you have anything in your recipe bag of tricks for chocolate lovers?” I sure do.

Of course, I made the Chocolate Cherry Soft Serve which is in another video, but today I am making my luscious Chocotini Shake. You will love it. Chocolate lovers will love it. People seeking health will love it, because it’s a food and a chocolate dessert at the same time.

Let’s get started. We begin by adding 2 frozen bananas to the VitaMix, and I just broke them up into a few pieces. And then of course we are adding one cup of my frozen Nectar of the Gods Sweetener, it is simply Medjool dates soaked in coconut water or plain water and then I freeze some of it to use in my delicious shakes and ice creams.

Simple, simple, simple. That’s what I’m going for here. I want my life to be simple, I’m not looking for more work, I’m looking for less work. More health, less work.

Then I am adding, and I consider this one of my secret ingredients, the pure, raw stone ground sesame tahini from the ChocolaTree in Sedona, Arizona. I received this as a gift. I’ve eaten many tahini’s in my day, I grew up on it, but this is the best. Add about 1/8 of a cup, that’s all you need. It gives it a smooth, creamy, luscious texture and you can’t taste the tahini. I like tahini, but in this all I want to taste is the chocolate.

Then I am adding a couple of shakes of cinnamon to equal one teaspoon. 3 shakes. And then, I’ve got this fabulous, organic vanilla, drizzle about a teaspoon in there, too. Ok, so we’ve got the bananas, the tahini, the frozen NOG, the vanilla and cinnamon, now add some cold water.

About the water: if you add no water to this recipe, you will end up with an ice cream, but today I’m going for a shake, so I suggest you add maybe 1/2 cup water and if you want it extra frosty in addition to the frozen bananas, add 4-6 cubes of ice, because I want to be able to sip this through a straw for the entire shake experience.

And then, the raw cacao, the raw chocolate.

Look at that, 2 heaping tablespoons, that’s one heaping, love this stuff but don’t overdo it, it is chocolate, although it’s raw and supposedly doesn’t have the negative side effects, we all know the rule of moderation. Here’s the second tablespoon and a little more for 2 1/2 heaping tablespoons.

Time to blend our delectable concoction and see what we get. I like to start on low just so it doesn’t blow all over the blender, then ramp it up a bit, just a few seconds and then you can flip it to high.

I know this is fantastic just by looking at it. Chocolate-y, fantastic. Watch how this pours out, just like a milkshake. It is so rich. Mmm, chocolate-y, creamy, what other milkshake has fiber from the dates and the bananas, potassium from the bananas, electrolytes from the coconut water the dates are soaked in, bursting with calcium from the raw tahini, bursting with flavor from the raw chocolate, with the vanilla and cinnamon it’s sensational.

Happy 50th video!

[..YouTube..] Keep having low fat raw vegan ideas. Carob is a great substitute for chocolate.

  2. [..YouTube..] Love carob! Thanks for mentioning it, as it reminds me to use it soon in a recipe. Jane.

  3. [..YouTube..] This looks amazing Jane! I’ve made your NOG (which is fab!), and I have everything else used in this recipe except one thing… now I just need that raw cacoa to make this shake. :P

  4. [..YouTube..] This comment gets you one step closer :) Jane.

  7. Themroc1 says:

[..YouTube..] Don’t have Carob, so will try with cocoa powder. How long do you blend for?

  8. [..YouTube..] @3loveg Glad to hear it and thanks for commenting. Your name’s in the hat. Jane.

  9. [..YouTube..] @miika2 What’s your version of NOG? I’d love to know, I am always looking for new twists. Jane

  10. [..YouTube..] @Themroc1 How long you blend depends on what kind of blender you have. In the VitaMix 30 seconds usually does it. Add more water if you have trouble blending. Your name’s in the hat, too. Jane.

  11. rcktfn says:

[..YouTube..] @blenditandMendit Basically the same as u except I infuse my coconut water with teas mixes for health or with lavender. I love infusing any liquids I use!! Love is… TL

  14. [..YouTube..] @miika2 Infusing the coconut water… now that’s an idea I haven’t tried… I’ll put it on my list of stuff to get to… Jane

  15. hyphymarky26 says:

[..YouTube..] Hi. Do you know any good tips on saving money for making green smoothies? I love you recipes by the way :)

  16. [..YouTube..] @hyphymarky26 Here’s a few tips: #1 buy in season, everything is cheaper in season.Buy in bulk, it’ll make you use up large quantities and actually consume the greens and fruit or plan ahead to split a bulk buy with a friend or family member. It takes planning, but it’s worth it.Go to your local markets, farms and farmer markets and buy end of day and markdowns. Once you scope out a few places and actually go there it gets easy.

  26. Angie says:

Can you use avocados in place of bananas?

    • Jane says:

      Hi Angie,
I don’t see why not. They won’t add the sweetness of bananas but you have the NOG for that. They will add the creaminess of the bananas.
Make it with avo and if you like the way it comes out, send it to me and I’ll make it on camera. It’s always good to have options and new ideas!
      Jane.

  27. Christine says:

I was really hoping I would find something with chocolate in it. Does it taste sweet or is it on the bitter side? I am so glad I found this website. I have a vitamix and absolutely love it. I rave about it to whoever will listen. I feel it’s the best thing I have in my kitchen.

    • Jane says:

      Hi Christine,
It’s on the sweet side, but not too sweet.
if you make them, come back and leave comments about it.
Thanks and it sounds like you get a lot of fun and wellbeing from your VitaMix as do I.
      Jane

  28. [..YouTube..] Hi Jane. Do you think almond butter would work well instead of the tahini? I don’t have any tahini but I MUST try this shake since I’m a huge chocolate fan. Please let me know what you think. Thanks, love your videos!Sarah

  29. [..YouTube..] @sarahlynnleez Hi Sarah,Yes, almond butter would work fine. That’s the great thing about these blends, it’s easy to switch out ingredients.

  30. Linda Jansen says:

I LOVE YOU!!!! Wow – I stumbled upon your videos, tried some of the recipes and I’m hooked. You are fantastic! I’m drinking my beauty water as I write this. Please, please, please, keep the videos coming. You have changed my life!

    • Jane says:

      Hi Linda,
Thank you so much for your kind words. I appreciate it so much.
I am presently on ‘video vacation’ but will be back soon with all I am learning during this time.
      Many thanks,
      Jane

  31. Miss Anna says:

    Hi Jane,

Wondering if we can make tahini in the Vitamix by just grinding up raw sesame seeds? Have you tried making it that way? Curious to know :)

  32. Anna says:

Wow! That’s how good this is when you want a chocolate fix. So quick too that it can be whipped up during a commercial break. One question though … Has anyone found raw cacao powder in bulk anywhere? At our whole foods, I believe it’s over 20 bucks a bag. Why is it more expensive than non raw cocoa powder? Is it just a lot more nutritionally dense?

    Anna

  33. neely says:

    Hi Jane!

I found your website during my spring break (I work in the school system), and now I am hooked!!! I LOVE your recipes and especially your great attitude! :)
My husband and I don’t have a vitamix (yet), and we don’t have a blender. We created this recipe in our food processor. I’m sure it didn’t turn out like your recipe..oh, we didn’t have the dates either, we had brown rice syrup, but it was still really yummy and thick!!!! I can’t wait to experiment with all of your great recipes, and we can’t wait to buy a vitamix.
Thank you for your healthy elixirs and yummy filling smoothies!
    Take care!

    Neely Roberts
p.s. have you ever read the book The Beauty Detox Solution? It’s great! She praises the vitamix and green smoothies.

    • Jane says:

      Hi Neely,
Thank you for your kind words and support. I appreciate it.
Congrats on using what you have and doing what you can, that’s the way to do it.
Yes, I’ve read Beauty Detox and many others, love all those books!

Keep in touch and have a great, greening day,
      Jane

  34. neely says:

Wow! Thanks Jane! :) That was a quick reply. My next question is..what would be a good vegan substitute for bananas? I am trying to wean very sugary fruits out of my diet and bananas just don’t sit well with my digestion (or my husbands). :( What would you suggest? I know avocado would be good, but it’s pretty high fat and for my green cleanse I am wanting to make it as low fat as possible. I read that mangos might be good due to the low glycemic index. What would you suggest?
    Thanks again!!
    Have a great day!
    Neely

  35. Michele says:

Anna, Amazon has the same cacao powder 2 bags for $24 if you do subscribe and save. Otherwise you can find it for $14 a bag at Vitacost.

    • Anna says:

Thanks Michelle. I will try it. I bought a different brand of raw cacao today at whole foods and it was cheaper than the navita (?) but may not be as tasty. This will be my first time trying it in raw form:)

  36. Michele says:

I haven’t tried it yet. I have a full container of the regular cheap baking cocoa that I want to use up first before buying the good stuff. I have a feeling once I try it, I will never use the other stuff up.

  37. olga says:

I love this recipe. I have only one question-can I use only 1 frozen banana to make it less banana tasting?

    • Jane says:

      Hi Olga,
Certainly. Make my recipes as-is or use as inspiration for your own. Modify them as you see fit to suit you.
Glad you like this blend, I sure do.

  38. Dee says:

I watched the 50th video … Mmmmmmmmm !!!! I am new to this site and opened my first young coconut this morning. The water was AMAZING !!! I made my first batch of almond milk alo this morning, and the NOG is “processing” right now ~ I can’t wait to use it. Thank you !!!
