Hi, I’m Jane from BlenditandMendit.com. Welcome. I have a new, leafy green… what is this? Do you recognize it? Some of you might, some of you may not. I didn’t know what it was. I was at an organic orchard yesterday, not too far from where I live. I have a video that I made a few months ago about three organic farms in three minutes, so go ahead and watch that and you can see where I was at.

What Does Sorrel Taste Like?

The farmer is cultivating sorrel, so I had to get some. It’s great to find a new green for our green smoothies and Beauty Waters and green juices, because we all need new greens to stay in the greens drinking game long term. What does sorrel taste like? That’s usually the most important question, because we expect leafy greens to be bitter. Well, the best way to find out what something tastes like is to eat it. You’re not going to believe the burst of lemon that comes out of this… it’s incredible. Sorrel used to be cultivated, it used to be common. It disappeared for about a hundred years and now it’s back. I, for one, am grateful.

So, I thought, “What can I do with this?” Should I make a green smoothie? Should I make a Beauty Water? What would go with this lemony, tangy, Vitamin C filled green? Full of fiber, chlorophyll, oxygen… so good for us… has so many gifts, so many wondrous contributions to our health.

Should I mix it with pineapple, perhaps? I have a beautiful pineapple I just cut up yesterday and I’m saving some of it for the pineapple cilantro Beauty Water from Janis, so watch for that. I thought, no, that doesn’t quite hit it, it would be good, but… and then, I have this gorgeous honeydew I cut up yesterday. Should I mix the sorrel with honeydew? Hmmm, I don’t know, it didn’t quite mesh. I know it would be good, it’s all good, but, it’s not what I wanted to do. I have this watermelon, I have that watermelon. I could bust one of those open and mix the sorrel with watermelon… but ultimately, I thought, because of the way the sorrel tastes… I’m gonna leave it alone. It’s so juicy and tangy. So, I decided to leave it alone.

Zero on the G.I. Scale

Let’s see what sorrel will taste like if I just fill my VitaMix up with water, I’ve got 6 cups of water in here, and add a couple leaves of sorrel. We can have a nice Beauty Water. A light, tangy, zero on the G.I. scale, refreshing Beauty Water to sip all day. A sorrel Beauty Water. Just sorrel and water. Let’s see what that’s like. We’ll taste it and then I’ll see if I need to add some fruit or maybe more sorrel. So far, it’s 6 cups of water, two leaves of sorrel. Let’s see what we’re going to get.

It tastes like it has a touch of lemon in it, a touch of green, but a new green. A new flavor. I love when we have a new green and a new flavor. Mmm… I think I’m keeping the sorrel Beauty Water just like this; water and sorrel. See, the thing about finding new greens, especially ones that are being cultivated, that are kind of wild, is they have really long roots. The roots go deep into the earth, into dirt that has not been depleted. Highly nourishing soil.

Our food is only as nutritous as the soil it’s grown in. So we want to always have a wide variety of nutritious greens. It’s so important and I’m always telling you that. So when I found the sorrel, I thought, we have to go for this. Look at that big mug of sorrel water. Sorrel Beauty Water. I feel beautiful when I’m drinking it. I feel beautiful when I’m out there at the organic garden just putzing around, seeing what the farmer has and he shows me this. I feel beautiful when I’m making it.. because it’s so full of life. Look at this – how can you not feel good sipping on this?
