How To Cut Pomegranate and Make Green Smoothie
Today I’m going to show you how to cut open a pomegranate and make a green smoothie out of it. Cutting open a pomegranate is easy. It can get a little bit messy, so wear an old shirt or an apron.
Crown
This end here is the crown of the pomegranate. Just take a knife, cut halfway through the crown and then make another perpendicular cut to that halfway down through the crown and then you can pull apart the 4 sections. I want you to work on a cutting board close to the sink, because we are going to need a bowl of water. Use your fingers to pry open the fruit the rest of the way and nudge all the ripe red seeds into the bowl of water.
As you’re working, the seeds are going to sink to the bottom and the white part, the membranes, the part you don’t want, is going to stay on top and float and then we can easily skim it off when we’re done. And then strain the seeds. Just pour that bowl, with the seeds and the water, right through a strainer. And look at the beauty; ruby red bounty that you get from this pomegranate. There’s about 2 cups of seeds in there. That only took a few minutes.
Now we can use a cup of those pomegranate seeds and make a green smoothie. Pomegranate seeds are sweet, juicy and a little bit tart – and crunchy, so when you chew on them, they burst, the juice bursts in your mouth when you chew on the seeds and that’s what’s going to make this smoothie so good. So measure one cup of the fresh pomegranate seeds into the VitaMix.
All Hail Kale
And I’m adding a large leaf of Dinosaur / Lacinato kale. Nice, deep, dark green kale full of phytonutrients, chlorophyll and oxygen. Just what we’re looking for. Then I like to add a handful of parsley. You can add some mint or cilantro. I’m just winging it here with the greens. If you have a different green, like spinach, you can use that instead. Then add a cup of water and you’re ready to blend.
The level of anti-oxidants in pomegranates is even higher than blueberries, cranberries and oranges. And this is because of the very high polyphenol content in the fruit. Very refreshing… slightly tart, not too sweet, full of greens, high water content, nutrient dense, makes you feel good. Thank you E.T. for writing in with a wonderful suggestion.
Pomegranate Green Smoothie Recipe:
- 1 cup pomegranate seeds
- 1 handful parsley
- 1 leaf dino/Lacinato kale
- 1 cup water
Blend smooth and savor every sip.
