Arthritis Reversal Smoothie from Blend It and Mend It!
The ACE-T
Today I am making a special smoothie for you. It comes from a viewer, Lori – “Hi, Lori, how are you doing?” Lori created this smoothie. She sent me all of the sources and the reasons she used these particular ingredients, and she calls it her Arthritis Reversal Smoothie. The ACE-T Smoothie, and I want to make it for you today. Below is her complete recipe along with sources, etc. I haven’t made this before. I’m making it for the first time today. Let’s get started.
Arthritis Reversal
Lori’s smoothie begins with 1 cup of fresh almond milk. Here’s how to make almond milk in the VitaMix. Add one teaspoon of turmeric, which Lori says she will gradually be increasing each time she makes this smoothie, with the ultimate goal of 2 TBS; but you’re supposed to start out slow with turmeric so you don’t upset your digestion. One chunk of fresh ginger, Lori says about 1/2″ x 1/2″. Add that right into the VitaMix. 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon. One banana, frozen or fresh, I’m using frozen today, I always keep a stash of them in the freezer. One cup fresh or frozen pineapple, I’m using frozen because I couldn’t find a ripe one. One teaspoon of vanilla extract and Lori said she used this to soften and blend those spice flavors. One large carrot or a handful of baby carrots, just break it up, add it in there. And a handful of hemp seed, which Lori says is optional. And she says, “I put that in there to make it a little more creamy (totally unnecessary in hindsight), and to add some protein because I felt like I needed some extra today.” So, if you have some hemp seed in the house, add a handful, if you don’t, that’s okay, blend it up without it.
Sunrise, Sunset
And this is Lori’s Arthritis Reversal Smoothie. It’s gonna be rich and creamy. Phytonutrients, anti-oxidants. Look at the color as I pour Lori Long’s Arthritis Reversal Smoothie into a beautiful jar to drink from. It’s golden, its orange-y, it’s yellow, it’s like a sunset and a sunrise all put together. It’s creamy… …
and now my favorite part, tasting… and to think that Lori created this specifically for arthritis reversal. A hint of pineapple… I don’t taste the turmeric, so it must have been just the perfect starter amount, Lori. Don’t really taste the banana, but I feel it in there. And the almond milk is so refreshing and creamy. The turmeric has anti-inflamatory properties and joint rebuilding characteristics. Cinnamon’s in there somewhere, too, it’s all in there but it combines to make something new.
I’ve never had anything like this before. Neither Lori or I are doctors. We’re just sharing our experiences and know-how with you. Because if you’re a baby boomer like me, and you were born somewhere between 1946 and 1964, your joints need this – mine do. And I feel very fortunate to be drinking my greens and my waterful foods and have somebody like Lori submit a smoothie like this that I get to make, I get to consume, and I get to share with you.
Lori’s Arthritis Reversal Smoothie – her sources and why she chose these particular ingredients:
Dear Jane,
Okay. I have figured out that this might have to be a series of smoothies. If I’m going to drink down a tablespoon or two of turmeric daily, I’m going to need more variety! This one is actually quite good in my opinion, but it has too many ingredients (9!), and it really tastes like dessert. (I’m actually not a huge fan of dessert.) On the other hand, it does contain a lot of arthritis-busting stuff. Sources are listed after recipe. I’m listing all the sources now because it takes a long time, and I want to put the books away! They apply also to the savory smoothie or soup I will do soon. Expect to see avocado (even Western medicine agrees on its support for joints!) and some crucifers—and, of course, more turmeric!
Lori’s dutiful disclaimer: “I am a hobbyist of an herbalist. I love herbs and love to incorporate them into my food and my life. I have also used whole foods to balance my system many times over the years. I do not have any degrees or certifications in herbalism or nutrition and am in no way qualified to offer health or medical advice. I have, however, followed (using my independent thinking skills) the advice of the books in my library for years and done quite well ridding myself of ailments by researching and trying stuff (or at least I was more successful on my own and with the advice of a good herbalist than any medical doctor ever was).”
ACE-T (that’s vitamins A, C, and E, plus turmeric) Smoothie
Side note: Vitamin D is also recommended highly, but I live in a very sunny place and eat lots of mushrooms, so I didn’t include it. Also, you might want to remind your viewers that turmeric is a DYE and will turn everything it touches yellow.
- 1 cup almond milk (incidentally, your mentioning “use an old pillowcase if you don’t have a nut bag” got me to thinking, and I made myself a couple of nut bags out of an old sheet that’s been in my fabric bin for months – worked like a charm! And FREE!)
- 1 teaspoon turmeric (which I will gradually be increasing each time I make the smoothie until it’s 2 tablespoons, but you’re supposed to start out slow so as not to upset your digestion)
- ½ teaspoon cinnamon
- 1 chunk of fresh ginger (about ½” by ½”) or ½ teaspoon ginger powder
- 1 frozen (or fresh) banana
- 1 cup frozen (or fresh) pineapple
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (to soften and blend those spice flavors)
- 1 large carrot (or a handful of baby carrots)
- A handful of hemp seed (optional)
Here is what each ingredient is for:
Almond Milk: for Vitamin E (and EFAs and protein) (The Way of Ayurvedic Herbs, Karta Purkh Singh Khalsa and Michael Tierra, 2008; Healing with Whole Foods, Paul Pitchford; and www.whfoods.com)
Turmeric: anti-inflammatory properties and joint-rebuilding characteristics (Robin Landis, Herbal Defense: Positioning Yourself to Triumph over Illness and Aging, 1997; The Way of Ayurvedic Herbs, Karta Purkh Singh Khalsa and Michael Tierra, 2008)
Cinnamon: increase circulation to the joints (to encourage healing) (same sources as above)
Ginger: increase circulation to the joints (to encourage healing) (same sources as above)
Banana: potassium, but mostly in there to make it creamier. J
Pineapple: Vitamin C (though not as much as some other sources, I get so much of it anyway . . . ) and bromelain to reduce inflammation and speed healing (University of Maryland Medical Center, http://www.umm.edu/altmed/articles/bromelain-000289.htm, among others listed above and below)
Vanilla: it was all about flavor on this one.
Carrot: Vitamin A and beta-carotene offer up an anti-oxidant value to assist with healing (Paul Pitchford and Robin Landis)
Hemp Seed: Well, I stuck that in there to make it a little more creamy (totally unnecessary in hind sight) and to add some protein because I felt like I needed some extra today.
I also used the following sources, but I’m too tired to go back in there and fish out which source I got what from:
Myhealthykitchen.com (I don’t usually cite random web pages, but this guy – once you get past the “infomercial feel” of his content – actually knows his stuff and has some good ideas.)
The Herbs of Life by Lesley Tierra, L. Ac., Herbalist, 1997
A Modern Herbal, Volume II by Mrs. M. Grieve, 1931
Natural Healing with Herbs, Humbart Santillo, N.D.,1984/10th printing 1993
Healing Foods, Miriam Polunin, 1997
Healthful Herbs, Jethro Kloss, 2008
Prescription for Nutritional Healing (Second Edition) by James F. Balch, M.D. and Phyllis A. Balch, C.N.C., 1933/ Updated by Phyllis Balch in 1997
Whew! Are you tired yet? I am!
Savory smoothie or soup coming in a week or two. Hope you like it!
Land Softly, Lori

[..YouTube..] I love this idea ~ Thanks for sharing Laurie and thanks for demonstrating it Jane!Debbie *Ü*
[..YouTube..] @4007fairview Hi Debbie,I’m so glad you like this – Lori is concocting others for arthritis and when she does, I’ll make them. I’ll ask her if she can make them for other conditions, too. Thanks for all your support. I appreciate it.:)Jane
[..YouTube..] This looks good. I was thinking about adding turmeric to my smoothies, too. Thanks to Laurie.I made the grape smoothie with dandelion and replaced the kale with romaine because that is what I had in the fridge. It was absolutely delicious. I only tasted the dandelion at the very last part of a sip. I honestly never thought of blending grapes.
[..YouTube..] Hi! Where did you get the glass straw? Thanks
[..YouTube..] Hi! Where did you get the glass straw? Thanks
[..YouTube..] @icedchai1 You can find both glass and stainless steel straws on ReuseIt.com.
Hi Jane,
thanks for posting all this information on your site. I really enjoy watching how you combine all ingredients for smoothies. I have a question which is not related to this video, but I don’t know better way of asking you.
I have been on and off raw food for about 6 months, but mostly I stay on the track. The question I have for you is what kind of (vitamins/minerals/etc) supplements are you taking while you are on raw food? Recently, I’ve notice I don’t have that much energy and I feel very very sleepy in the last week, so I suppose I’m missing something. Can you please share with us your thoughts on this?
Best regards,
LovNa
Hi LovNa,
Good question. I’m going to answer it in a blog post as the answer is a bit lengthy for a comment box.
It will be up later today.
Many thanks for writing in with it.
Jane
[..YouTube..] @maiOmai216 I’m so glad you used what you had on hand and came up with a delish smoothie – speaking of grapes, in the summer when they are in season or on sale I buy a lot and freeze them and they make the best sorbets and frosty smoothies.Jane

[..YouTube..] @icedchai1 I ordered them from strawsbycarli on etsy – but i didn’t get the skinny brush for cleaning them and wish I had, so I use a pipe cleaner
also, they have bamboo holders but they were too pricey so I made my own – i love using glass straws, it changes the entire smoothie sipping experience for the better – elegant and calm.Jane
[..YouTube..] WTF is up with the sound? Too much smoothy drinking?
[..YouTube..] @TheAppieShow Thanks for the info – I didn’t know there were stainless steel straws. Jane
This promises to be a fun place to visit and learn. Thanks.
Hi Kathy,

Here’s a standing invite: if you have a favorite green smoothie, feel free to send it in and I’ll make it on camera.
I enjoy getting viewer submitted concoctions and elixirs as it helps me not get in a rut and it helps all the viewers, too.
Some of the best drinks and smoothies have come from readers and viewers of my blog and YouTube channel.
Variety is the spice of life in the green smoothie world, too.

[..YouTube..] no sound!
[..YouTube..] @mermaiddelsol Hi, I’m able to listen to this just fine. I checked it out and I’m sorry, but I don’t know why you’re not getting sound.Jane

[..YouTube..] i’ll figure it out! thank you!
[..YouTube..] @mermaiddelsol If I was more techie I would possibly have ideas for you. If you are using headphones maybe they aren’t working?Jane
[..YouTube..] got it going jane! i don’t know what happened?? (i’m it was on my end!)
thank you!
[..YouTube..] got it going jane! i don’t know what happened?? (i’m sure it was on my end!)
thank you!
[..YouTube..] @mermaiddelsol Glad to hear it
[..YouTube..] I have arthritis quite bad, so I will have to make this….. and make it a regular! Eating raw food now definitley helps too
[..YouTube..] @MsNilor I am glad to hear it. Please keep me posted on how greens and fresh foods help you. I know there are many who would like to get progress reports as arthritis affects a lot of people. Thanks!Jane
[..YouTube..] I think it is awesome that you answered this post!! I bought some organic tumeric, and have not used it yet. This will be great! I have stopped all my medication I was on for inflammation, and eat 90% raw foods now. The smoothies are such a wonderful way to get all your nutrition, aren’t they??I am glad I found you!
[..YouTube..] @MsNilor Many thanks for your kind words and support. I appreciate it.Happy blending,Jane
[..YouTube..] Wow you were born between those years! Yet yo look so young! Like 25 years old.
[..YouTube..] @chavitavb Thanks! It’s the kitchen lighting – if I was under a thousand watts, you’d see every line and wrinkle.
Jane
[..YouTube..] Hi there, I have a question for you. Those sealable jars you are drinking from, do you store a batch away in the fridge or are you simply using it as a drinking cup. I am told that smoothies should be drank immediately if possible due to the oxidation of the fruit/vegetable and it’s recommended not to store.
[..YouTube..] @sashmuscle Right you are about green smoothies – fresh is best. I use the jars as drinking glasses.Jane
[..YouTube..] @blenditandMendit Ok, thanks for clarifying that. Are there any blends that can be safely stored away in the fridge or freezer for later use? How about making your own cranberry vinaigrette salad dressing for example? Love your vids btw !
[..YouTube..] @blenditandMendit I’ve been working on getting rid of oste. arthritis in my hands.Nuts seem to make the pain worse so it almond milk a good idea?
[..YouTube..] @Liendelou I’m not a doctor, so I can’t comment on that. But if nuts made my arthritis worse then I would eliminate the almond milk and use water instead.
[..YouTube..] Thank you for having this video.I enjoyed it tremedously. The hemp seed milk is just good for you and i have been hearing a lot about tumeric.I went to South America in March and some villagers made me a medicine that i took for 5 days that put my arthritis and fibromyalgia at bay.IT hasn’t returned as of yet anyway. They made it with marijuana and i didn’t get high from the use of it and honestly i really do thing this treatment is known here in the states but only a select few use it.
[..YouTube..] Thank you, Jane for sharing Lori’s recipe. The almond milk and this smoothie are the first things I’ve made in my Vita-Mix, and both are delicious. Unfortunately, my NOG hasn’t thickened up like yours, but maybe it needs another day since I used regular water instead of coconut water. Anyway, I appreciate your taking the time to share your knowledge.
[..YouTube..] @glh278net You’re welcome! BTW: every batch of NOG I make seems to be different. I think it’s due to the dates, their variety, moisture, softness, time soaking, stirring, etc. So don’t fret if it doesn’t look exactly like one of my batches. The VitaMix whips them all up the same. Keep me posted.
Recipe looks great but how many times a week should you have this?
Hi John,
I am not a doctor and don’t know how many times a week someone should have this. Best to take the recipe to your doctor / health practitioner and get professional advice.
Thank you for understanding.
Jane
Hello Jane and Lorie
Celery is one of the most important ingredient for arthritis. If that could be a part of this smoothie. It will make a perfect smoothie for arthritis.
Thanks
Manmeet
Good info on celery. While it’s not in this particular blend, here are a few smoothies with celery that I’ve enjoyed. Let me know what you think:
http://blenditandmendit.com/vitamix-antiaging-celery-sunshine-smoothie/
http://blenditandmendit.com/beth-celery-raspberry-green-smoothie/
http://blenditandmendit.com/celery-tomato-savory-smoothie/
There’s more if you search out celery in the search box top right.
I just made the smoothie according to directions (resisting the temptation to add greens)and it is delicious! I agree with your comments about the flavor… everything blends together deliciously to create a very unique, and subtle, flavor. Thank you, Lori, for sharing the recipe. And thank you, Jane, for the this great website and videos! You are a blessing!!
Hi Darla,
You’re welcome! Glad you made it and that you commented so others can have opinions other than mine:)
I enjoy knowing what viewers think of the blends, so thanks!
